Working with our newest co-development partner and Europe's largest performance air filter manufacturer, PiperCross (UK), .UUC Motorwerks has developed the ultimate intake for selected BMW models.
The Viper is based on the famous Pipercross Viper airbox and uses velocity air force to supply a cold, dense supply of air into the engine. Each Viper air filter element is encased in a high quality contoured airbox made of either carbon fiber or powdercoated aluminum (both featuring aluminum trim powder coated in a deep black finish) with a flexible cold air feed ducted directly from the bumper duct used for brake cooling air.
- When positioned in an area of high air pressure, the cold air feed on the Viper forces air straight into the 100mm diameter inlet, swirling it through a unique Pipercross multi-laminate air filter.
- At this stage, the airbox housing prevents under-hood hot air from getting into the air intake - ensuring maximum power from oxygen-rich air.
- Beyond the heat shield, the air passes out of the filter unit through a ram pipe base which helps to further increase the pressure before it enters the engine's inlet manifold.
- Integrate pressure relief eliminates the possibility of taking in water (as when driving through a deep puddle) which can damage the engine.
The reverse flow filter element and 150mm ram pipe base maximize the physical phenomenon of air moving towards a surface area, creating more airflow on the edge of the inlet than in the center. The unique design of the filter cone and inlet tune the moving airflow to increase its speed and therefore its pressure thus promoting laminar airflow into the engine.
The physics may sound a little complicated but the increase in power and improved throttle response gained from a Viper against a standard vehicle air box will be immediately evident.
Just as obvious will be the distinctive looks of either version of the Viper - the sealed air intake with the right combination of carbon fiber and alloy inlet or high-tech silver powdercoat will be the focal point of any engine bay.
The results speak for themselves - the Pipercross Viper has fast become the filter of choice for many of the worlds top builders of modified vehicles - used on both road and track.

Two versions available:
1) Carbon Fiber (CF) airbox.
2) Silver powdercoated airbox.
Note: Both versions have exact same performance, difference is only cosmetic.
Real results, real cars:
We caution any person comparing dyno results from different manufacturers that it is important to realize that legitimate comparisons only come from testing the exact same car on the exactsame dyno, and preferably on the exact same day. Variations between different cars, different dynos, and even different operator setup styles can dramatically alter the results.
Viper features:
Leading-edge technology foam filter (re-usable) that surpasses all oiled gauze and paper filters for fine-particle filtration and efficiency.
100% enclosed air box ducted directly to the brake duct for maximum efficiency and high-speed ram effect.
Ducting tube features integral pressure relief to eliminate the possibility of water intake and to provide a secondary cold air inlet behind the headlight.
Alternate installation possibilities for custom bodywork or special requirements.
Details:
Design is similar to the E46 M3 which has the majority of the intake path coming from the driver's side brake duct. If BMW were tweaking the standard 3-series for better intake efficiency, this is what they would do.
The tube itself is a high-pressure polypropylene that can withstand the vacuum of forced induction (turbo/supercharger) applications. The inner texture itself serves to break up the laminar flow effects that typically make other tubes "act" smaller due to this stagnant layer that "clings" to the walls (the boundary layer effect). Overall diameter of our nominal 3" or 4" tube (depending on application) is actually and effectively larger, increasing efficiency.
This intake design, filter, and tube technology was originally seen in the Lotus 340R.
Filtration is accomplished via the most sophisticated media available today, a specially developed polyurethane foam which has both higher performance and life expectancy than paper. This reticulated foam is created by a chemical reaction, it is then placed in a gas filled combustion chamber where a controlled explosion burns away any complete cell walls in the material to form a skeletal cellular structure which is strictly quality controlled. This process ensures that the foam consists of tiny open cells which trap contaminants. The cell size of the foam, its porosity, is measured in Pores Per Inch (PPI). These air filters use up to six layers of foam with varying porosity descending in pore size in the direction of air flow. Cleaning is very simple, a simple rinse in water and a light re-oiling is all that is necessary. This filter material is designed for street use, but is suitable for racing use.
PiperCross pedigree:
Europe's largest manufacturer of performance air filters is on the leading edge of technology development. PiperCross filters are used extensively in racing venues such as Formula 1, LeMans, WRC and is a critical component in the "World's Fastest Street Legal Car" .
Co-development:
In examining laboratory and real-world dyno/performance results, UUC has determined that PiperCross is the "ultimate" in performance filtration technology. The decision to join with PiperCross as an official UUC Co-Development Partner was therefore quite simple... they make the best, we demand the best, perfect match. UUC's involvement has been to develop the BMW fitments unique to the USA market, usually different than the models offered in Europe and the rest of the world. Our dyno tuning has resulted in a unique variation of virtually every PiperCross component used for our fitments.
